About Us

Why We're Here

We have been put on this planet to make sofas that people ask to have their photo taken on.

Our sofas are intended to look different from the sea of bland designs that are available to every day people.

Incredibly designed, beautiful sofas should accessible to all.

That's what we're here to provide.

We want to put a masterpiece of a sofa in every living room in the UK.

Our View On Sofa Design

The world seems to have turned a blind eye to the aesthetics design of their sofas.

DFS have somehow made people believe that jumbo cord fabric is acceptable.

Would you wear jumbo cord fabric?

Exactly.

Your sofa is probably the biggest item in your house, it defines the look of your home.

And yet I would describe the look of most people's sofas as "student accommodation" if I was being generous.

We understand that sofas need to be comfortable, but that doesn't mean they should look anything less than a piece of art.

The design of your sofa should be as important as the design of the clothes you wear.

The thing is, you can't change your sofas outfit like you can with clothes, so it needs to look 800 million dollars at all times (at least).

If this is the case, why the hell is there so much jumbo cord in people's living rooms?

No. No more.

Jumbo cord is banned at Col Studio.

Grey sofas are banned at Col Studio.

Our sofas are designed to be THE single statement piece in your entire house.

It is the jewel in the crown of your home.

The whole of your interior design should be built around an incredible sofa.

People should want to have their photo taken on your sofa.

If they don't, your sofa is not good enough.

Our Inspiration

We take inspiration from the greatest furniture designers from the 1950s through to the 1980s and we apply our own spin on this.

We are the opposite of DFS and Sofology and all the other peddlers of sheer boredom in sofa form.

Our sofas are designed to be challenging to what most people consider to be the norm.

We want boring people to think our designs are weird.

The best stuff usually is... at first.

Our History

Col Studio was founded in 2024 by myself, Tom Fitzgerald.

I became interested in sofas in around 2016.

I took evening classes to learn upholstery, ended up getting a job at the upholstery school.

I moved onto a sofa factory in Salford to learn how sofa manufacture works, breathed in a lot of saw dust and made a lot of sofas.

I then moved into the retail side, working at Harveys, Sofa Workshop, Sofa Club and DFS, learning all that is good and bad about sofa retail.

And believe me, there is a lot of bad.

Along the way I got a good idea of how the whole industry works but couldn't help but notice, there were barely any sofas that I would actually buy.

I started work on creating Col Studio in 2020, but one thing lead to another and before you know it, it was 2024 before I actually got around to making the company official.

The name Col came from my mum who was called Colette, or Col for short.

She loved interior design and was constantly planning the look she would have one day.

She enjoyed trips around furniture shops and looking at fabrics and always wanted to buy her own brand new sofa set instead of hand me downs.

Unfortunately, she never quite got them.

So I'm going to make those sofas for her.

Colette was probably the kindest person ever to walk this earth and that is the basis of how I aim to operate Col Studio as a business.

Col Studio is named after my mum as a message to myself, that it should make her proud.

And that's what I intend to do.
